| Dear Carole,
As mentioned last week, I was notified of a DNA match with Mr. Robert K Smith.
Mr. Smith lives in America.
This is the info on Robert Smith born 1819.
He might be a link to my family, although many years ago.
Is there a way that you can help me trace Robert Smith born 1819?
---------------------------------------- Robert Smith - Born 1819 at "Newton By the Sea" (north of Newcastle, England) Died in Lisbon in 1876 Married to Isabel born at "Berwick-upon-Tweed" (North England) Children: Thomas, Daniel
-----------------------------------------
From FTDNA:| Quote: | Refine your results with paper trail input The above numbers are based exclusively on the comparison of their Y-DNA results, which show 1 mismatches.
However, these results can be refined if their paper trail indicates that no common ancestor between Ernest F. Smith and Mr. Robert K. Smith could have lived in a certain number of past generations.
If you don't know this information for a fact, do not change the "1" in the box in the next paragraph. However, if you have the information, please enter in the box and click on the recalculate button.Ernest F. Smith and Mr. Robert K. Smith did not share a common ancestor in the last generation(s). (Because the important factor in calculating the time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor is the number of generations between which mutations could take place, the number of years per generation is irrelevant in FTDNATiP calculations.). |
Please if you can help it would be much appreciated.
Looking forward hearing from you, Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Sunday,
Karin. |

| Hi Karin, Terribly sorry about that, I think it was probably my fault about the wrong notification email, I made an error I think when splitting your post earlier from >> genealogy quotes >> to this new Topic, & hadn't got around to replying here yet - but I'm here now!!
Newton-by-the-Sea is an 18th-century fishing village in the old Parish of Embleton, on the Northumberland Coast (Northumberland is a county in north-east England) - See our Topic on this Board............. >> Links for N-EAST ENGLAND Research (Northumberland, Durham) >> Quite a number of site's links on there that you might find useful.
You should also find some helpful information at the following Genuki page about the District and records holdings........ http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Embleton/ and for information about other Northumberland towns and parishes, eg - you mention Berwick-upon-Tweed - follow the index at this Genuki page........... http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Parishes.html
Also - try a search for possible Christenings of Robert Smith in the IGI database at >> familysearch.org >>
Good luck Karin & please let us know how you go on with all that. Was just thinking - I remember you said not long ago that you thought your Frederick might have some north-east connection - Northumberland/Durham. That might yet prove to be correct then???
Carole
PS - we all love the genealogy quotes you posted. _________________ Carole, Smith Project/Smith Chat Admin Nothing is too small to know, and nothing too big to attempt (William Van Horne) |

Hello again Karin, Yes the little "salute" smiley & some of the others are not working properly at the moment - hoping to have time to correct those when I'm doing next maintenance.
This might be of some help to you.......... Only seem to be 9 x Robert Smiths of approximate correct age indexed for........1841 Census Northumberland
** if born in 1819, the one marked ** looks the most probable. But you'll know better than I do now I think - as to which of these Registration Districts - Newton by the Sea belongs?
Name / approx birth year / age at 1841 / gender
1841 District Newcastle upon tyne SMITH, Robert 1817 24 M ** SMITH, Robt 1820 21 M ** SMITH, Robert 1821 20 M
1841 District Tynemouth SMITH, Robert 1817 24 M SMITH, Robert 1821 20 M SMITH, Robert 1821 20 M
1841 District Alnwick Union SMITH, Robert 1821 20 M SMITH, Robert Adams 1821 20 M SMITH, Robert Edwin 1821 20 M
That's all I have for those - but you could follow up the full households or download the original census page scans, at one of the databases at either The Genealogist, or Find my Past or Ancestry. If you decide to do that - it would be interesting to know what you find for any of these households?
See you later aligator |

| Hi Karin! This is so exciting! However did you make all the connections? It is also sad isn't it? We wonder how these young children survived in orphanages years ago. Do share more of the story with us, Gillian _________________ ''What will survive of us is love.'' Philip Larkin |

| Hi Gillian, Thank you for the e-mail received, I appreciate your kindness. We had a DNA test done through FTDNA and were notified by them of a 11/12 marker match. I have contacted Mr Rob Smith who now lives in the US and he e-mailed me his information. Rob's grandfather was born in Gibraltar. I then went to Ancestry.uk and had a look for Fred Smith born 1886 - the year of my grandfathers birth in Gibraltar, I have found him on the 1901 census return as mentioned. He is also on Familysearch. I do realise that a lot of work still needs to be done. I wrote to the Orphanage in Scotland but had no reply yet. I am also doing my utmost best to make contact with Gibraltar. This afternoon I did a search for on Alfred Smith born in Gibraltar (according to our info my grandfather's father was Alfred) and have found an Alfred Smith born 1867 in Gibraltar. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Smith. My heart wants to break if I think of my grandfather. My father Frederick Ernest was one month old when his dad went into WW1 and ten months old when his dad died in 1916. To think that my dad and his brother Ernest Alfred lost their father and their father were in an orphanage. I would love to know more about the Orphanage in Renfrewshire, the name of the orphanage was Kilmacolm Orphanage. I hope to hear from them soon. Well, Gillian once again thank you - please keep your fingers cross that I will be able to find some form of confermation. Until next time, From a cold SA,
Karin. |

I am not saying that this means anything but it is possible. It seems as if this family stayed differnet places when the children were born. Thanks so much again for your kindness and help, Have a lovely day, Until next time, Karin. |

| Hi Karin! I hope this leads you to more information. It is now the holiday season in the UK and response to your letters may be slow for that reason. I do hope you hear something soon. Cheers Gillian _________________ ''What will survive of us is love.'' Philip Larkin |
