| Hi Carole, every time I find a census record, or any record for that matter, that connects with my family I always save it into a file on my pc (and later transfer the file onto disk).
I would be only too happy to email copies over to any member who would find them useful.
Having recently discovered that we also had Smith connections way back in mid 1730's - I just discovered my 6x g, grandfather b. 1707 married Mary Smith abt. 1730 ish, so now have some more digging and delving to do.
This has come as a big surprise as all that side of my family are from Mum's Cheshire and, until this recent discovery, I only thought we had Smith's on Dad's side in Liverpool. Elizabeth Smith married James Smith (my g. granddaddy) in 1870 Liverpool but I'm having problems finding out anything about her, apart from her father being Thomas Smith.
However, as I just logged into the forum I was loading up my family history notes when I spotted the 1881 and 1891 census records on the sheet and, low and behold, there's a Mary Smith widow 60 and James Smith 27 living at the same address as my people.
Now I know my g. gran, Elizabeth Smith had a brother James so this looks very promising.
Sorry, I'm rambling now - so, this now looks like the Smith's were connected in some way (hopefully related) to my family.
If I'm correct this will also point to my g. gran and her family as being of Irish descent. P.S. I love the new format of the site, the opening pages are absolutely brilliant. _________________ Can't find my Smiths! HELLO - has anybody seen my Smiths at all? |

So you have Smiths of Liverpool on your Dad's side, and now you've discovered Smiths on your mum's side in Cheshire? Have I got it right? I notice you're username is still not shown in red!! ooh sorry! it should be! as you should be in Smith Project Usergroup (Lancs, WRY & IoM), so will sort it.
and you said.....| Quote: | every time I find a census record, or any record for that matter, that connects with my family I always save it into a file on my pc (and later transfer the file onto disk).

That's great! Thanks, that would be really good of you. So - just when you've time, earth2smiths, if you post a list here for other members to look at - wonderful!!
Also if you like - you could post me a "new interests" online form about your Liverpool Smiths (or any other Smiths of Lancs, WRYorks or IoM) for the "Smith List". If you want to do that - you can go to link >> "Online Office" and go into the second Board "Join Project-Submit Interests" - in there its easy to find your way to the Online Form.
Will chat again soon - & don't forget to call into Coffee Break Chit-Chat any time again soon too - for a natter!! and hope your little doggys OK? Taraa for now, Carole |

| Carole wrote: | Hi earth2smiths,
Just been looking again at your Interests submitted to Smith List.....
I realise that this shows the Lucas's were from Ireland, but you've also mentioned you have Cheshire interests (but I'm thinking thats on your mum's side - and your Lucas's here are on your Dad's side...........
| Quote: | The 1891 Liverpool census shows:- 5 House 13 Court Saltney St Charles Lucas age 50 b Ireland Dock Labourer. Mary Lucas age 48 b Ireland b.abt. 1843 Mary Smith age 60 Widow b Ireland b. abt. 1830 Son James Smith age 27 b Ireland. b.abt. 1864 | But if I've got this wrong at all - & your Lucas's did live in Cheshire at any time, & if by any chance they lived around Macclesfield/Bollington/Prestbury area - I wonder if you could have a look at muffintreault's Topic (Judy in USA) - who's looking for any info on Lucas or Loomis of that area? Link to Judy's Topic on Cheshire Board is........... >> Bollington (Prestbury Parish) - Lucas/Loomis >>
A long-shot - but thought no harm in asking
PS: a special link just for you !!>>
Happy birthday earth2smiths>> |
Hi Carole, thank you so much for the birthday message, thank you. I'm 57 today - still young, I know, but the old bones are starting to creak and ache a lot nowadays.
Right, my Smiths! Those Lucas's you found on the 1891 census records are definitely connected to my dad's family because in the 1881 census my paternal grandfather, Christopher William Reid b. 1872 Liverpool, is living with Charles and Mary Lucas in Liverpool and they are given as his uncle and aunt. This is what leads me to believe that my Dad's Reids were in fact of Irish descent and not Scottish at all, as Dad used to believed.
If this is so then I think if must follow that Christopher William Reid's mother, Elizabeth SMITH was also of Irish descent. I say this because in Liverpool, as in most big cities, different nationalities tended to stay with 'their own kind' i.e. irish came to irish relatives/friends and so on.
So, this means Dad's Smiths are most likely from Ireland. All I know of the Lucas connection is what the census records tell me, I'm afraid, but I will look at the website you mentioned.
Now the Smiths on my Mum's side has come as a complete surprise and I only discovered they existed over the past couple of weeks via a distant relative I found in Cheshire connected to our Hardy side.
Apparently, my 6 x great grandfather, William Hardy baptised 28 Jan 1707, Cheshire, married Mary SMITH (details unknown) around 1727.
Unfortunately, I can't find any records for their wedding or about Mary on the Cheshire records sites. ::
I keep telling my sisters we must get together and do a seance to try to find out where all our Smiths came from!
So! Now I'm a double Smith, so it seems.
Hope I haven't strained your eyes with all this lot Carole. ____________________________________________________
