PostSubject: My Tanzania.   Fri 7 Sep 2007 - 22:51

This poem is dedicated to Tanzania and my best friend Vasant at Mwanza Yacht Club. May the force be with you Vasant (1979).

My Tanzania.

You waited but I wasn’t ready.
Nor really was I quite prepared.
For your smell,your pungent aroma.
Your beauty could not be compared..

But your beauty doth hide a great sadness.
And it’s one that I know makes you cry.
As a mother you’d die for your children.
As a country you watch as they die.

I worked and you watched as I flourished.
Your sons worked along with me too.
We supplied power to all of your people.
Who can pay? There’s all but a few.

But they’re few so why should we bother.
Listen up and I’ll tell you my friend .
As your Mother and country I tell you.
For your future on them you depend.

I worked alongside men who died trying.
For their country had nothing but pride.
As a mother please speak to your leaders.
As a country don’t let our plight hide.

The day I left Tanzania my saddest day.
I knew that my time was done.
I couldn’t leave Tanzania without one word.
Vasant the only one.

Postscript.

Ah then the day I knew I'd done.
I sat down beneath the noon day sun.
To pondered upon the words I'd wrote.
Then thought I'd better leave a note.

Don't rub me out I know you care.
I speak the truth and take you there.
To places that you've never been.
Or seen the faces I have seen.

I wrote my words so you would feel.
The pain, and wounds that just won't heal .
To feel that pain will always last.
Until we cast it to the past.
